Our Mission

The Downsview FC’s Recreational program introduces players to the game of soccer and follows the Long-term Player Development model, which is a player centered approach.

The aim of the program is to provide a developmental system of learning to build a skills and technique based foundation, making the transition from Recreation to Competitive a smooth and natural transition.

Active Start – U5: Building Blocks

This program is designed to instill a love of soccer at an early age and becoming comfortable with the soccer ball in a safe and fun environment. The objective is to get children moving and to keep them active while developing basic directional movement skills by running and kicking.

Mini Soccer – U6 – U8: FUNdamentals

The focus is on developing the key fundamentals of the game and is perfect for either a beginner or an experienced player, that has played before, but in a fun environment. Each week the players will focus on a specific skill: passing, shooting, and dribbling will be emphasized in a practice with each player progressing at a pace they are comfortable at. They will be able to practice their new skills in a “game” environment in inter-squad games that will promote a feel for the ball while playing within a fun but structured setting.

Junior Soccer – U9 – U12: Learning To Train

This stage introduces the players to more advanced techniques with a focus more on positional play and to begin to teach some basic tactics. The focus remains on a creating fun and challenging environment to stimulate learning and to promote a love of the game. At this stage having an effective role model is very important and the coach’s role becomes even more important, along with famous players and teams. The games format within the practice sessions range from 6v6 to 8v8 with no league standings being kept as the emphasis is still on fun and building confidence on the ball.

Soccer for Life – U13+Soccer for Health and Growth

This stage requires a fun and challenging environment to keep players interested and active in soccer. These recreational and competitive players will enjoy and benefit from exciting and stimulating practices and games.
